Technical Site Engineer
Join Desmet, a global leader in industrial process solutions in the field of seed preparation, solvent extraction, oil refining, fat modification, biodiesel and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)/Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) pre-treatment business lines. We are looking fora Technical Site Engineer overseeing the erection, commissioning, and maintenance of advanced oil processing plants. In this role, you will supervise and coach erection during the execution of our seed preparation, solvent extraction, oil refining and fat modification product lines. Post start-up, you will lead ongoing maintenance and ensure operational excellence. This role requires strong mechanical and piping expertise, field experience, and a willingness to travel.
Position reporting to our headquarters in Johannesburg, South-Africa (candidates can be based in any African country).
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
During erection phase :

You will Inspect valves, pumps, and conveyors to identify malfunctions resulting in leakage, spillage, overflow, or blockages.

Serve as the primary on-site contact for resolving technical and practical issues with clients.

Supervise and verify installation quality in accordance with isometric drawings, piping routes, and P&IDs.

Oversee the unpacking and inspection of delivered equipment and materials.

Provide guidance and technical instructions to client contractors during fabrication and erection activities.

Lead and support pre-commissioning and commissioning tasks, including pump alignment, equipment lubrication, line flushing and blowing, specific line testing, vacuum checks, and leak detection.
During maintenance phase:

Inspect Desmet’s process installation and its component to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.

Perform troubleshooting and minor repairs to ensure optimal equipment performance.

Supervise and coordinate maintenance activities with client and subcontractors.

Ensure all work complies with relevant safety standards, regulations, and company protocols.

Document and maintain records of inspections, maintenance activity, repairs, and other work done.

Coordinate and supervise maintenance activities in collaboration with clients and subcontractors.

Liaise closely with the Customer Service Department and the Quality Control & Site Services Manager to ensure seamless operations and issue resolution.
REQUIRED PROFILE

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in industrial facility environments involving machinery assembly, control, and erection.

Solid understanding of welding processes and piping systems, particularly heavy wall piping (SS304/SS316) is a strong advantage.

Proficient in reading and interpreting industrial drawings and must have skills and experience in the use of control instruments Strong communication skills with the ability to work independently and effectively in multicultural environments.

Analytical, structured, and proactive approach to problem-solving with a quick learning curve.

Demonstrates autonomy, organizational strength, and a solution-oriented mindset.

Fluent in English; additional language skills are a plus. French language proficiency is highly desirable.

Willingness to travel frequently (70%), mainly within the African continent.
