Extrusion-Pressing
Dry extrusion followed by pressing is ideal to enhance the nutritive value of oilseed meal. In collaboration with Insta-Pro International, Desmet is offering the ExPress® technology specially developed to produce high-performance soybean meal for the feed industry.
While the anti-nutritional factors in the soybeans are dramatically reduced by temperature increase in the high-shear dry extruder, the short time exposure to heat has a limited impact on the protein. The pressing of the extruded full-fat soybean enables an efficient, solvent-free, and steam-free mechanical extraction, and produces a soybean meal rich in highly digestible amino acids and metabolizable energy, together with high-quality crude soybean oil. Extrusion-pressing is also possible with rapeseed and sunflower after pre-pressing.
How does it work
The high-shear dry extruder is fed with milled seeds to allow for homogeneous process condition within the extruder feed material. Inside the extruder barrel, feed material will undergo severe mechanical shearing and upon exiting the extruder a complete rupturing of plant cells occurs, turning solid pieces of broken seed into a softened and flowing outlet material where oil is easily available. The high-temperature /short-residence-time condition inside the extruder is critical to ensure an optimal deactivation of anti-nutritional factors while increasing protein digestibility.
Once in the screw press, the friction on oilseed extrudate inside the press cage will allow for maximum oil extraction rate ending up with a press cake with as low as 6 % residual oil. ExPress® meal is known for its performance for producers of meat, milk and eggs. It's been proven to increase animal farming productivity.

Foots recovery and oil clarification: Oil recovered at the outlet of the press contains suspended solids. After the decanting stage, where most of them are removed, the oil is filtered and cooled before storage.
- Cake Cooling: The hot cake, discharged from the press at around 120°C, is cooled before storage in a vertical or horizontal cooler using counter-current airflow.

Raw materials
